Therapy for neurodiverse clients

Recognize your strengths and thrive

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is about the natural differences in how our brains work. It recognizes that people experience and engage with the world in various ways, and that there isn’t just one “normal” brain. Neurodiversity includes a range of neurological differences that affect how people learn, communicate, and perceive their surroundings.

Types of neurodiversity

Neurodiversity includes several conditions, such as:

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Learning disabilities
  • Tourette's syndrome

Common experiences within neurodiversity

While each neurodiverse person's journey is unique, many share similar experiences. Common themes include:

Self-identity:

How people see themselves and relate to others is shaped by their personal and social identity.

Social and emotional dynamics:

Some people may mask their true traits to fit in with societal norms, which can make social interactions and emotional experiences more complicated.

Sensory sensitivities:

May experience heightened or lowered sensitivity to lights, sounds, or touch, leading to feelings of being overwhelmed.

Executive functioning challenges:

Some may find it difficult to plan, organize, manage time, or complete tasks.

Communication differences:

People may prefer direct communication or struggle with non-verbal cues.

Attention regulation:

Difficulty maintaining focus on tasks, especially those that are not of high interest, or alternatively, hyperfocus on specific interests or topics.

Our approach to working with neurodiverse clients

Our approach is rooted in neuro-affirming care, where we support our clients in recognizing the unique strengths that neurodiverse traits bring to relationships and life. In our work together, we focus on harnessing those strengths, whether it's a keen attention to detail, creativity, or innovative problem-solving. We believe that neurodiversity isn't something that needs to be "fixed"; it's a natural part of who a person is.

Your brain is a part of you, but it doesn’t define you.
You are more than your thoughts and behaviors.

An eclectic approach to neurodiversity therapy

We use a mix of different therapeutic techniques to meet the unique needs of each client. We strive to create a comfortable environment by adapting communication styles, adjusting the sensory space, and introducing techniques to help manage sensory overload.

ADHD therapy

ADHD shapes the unique ways a person experiences and engages with the world. People with ADHD often approach life with creativity, empathy, and out-of-the-box thinking. Instead of focusing solely on the challenges, we highlight the strengths of ADHD, like adaptability and a passion for meaningful projects among many others.

Our counseling approach for people with ADHD is personalized to meet each person’s unique needs, with goals that may include:

  • Boosting self-confidence by recognizing and celebrating your unique strengths
  • Strengthening your ability to manage emotions and bounce back from challenges
  • Improving communication and social skills for more fulfilling relationships
  • Strengthening skills like time management and organization

Through personalized strategies, we help people with ADHD thrive in ways that honor their true selves, fostering both growth and self-acceptance.

Therapy goals

Our therapy goals are centered on each client’s individual needs.
Some common themes we can work on include:

  • Understanding how a diagnosis affects self-identity
  • Improving emotional regulation and coping strategies
  • Navigating social relationships and enhancing communication skills
  • Building on strengths to boost self-esteem and confidence
